Why Does My Ceiling Fan Wobble?

Almost always loose hardware or blade imbalance, not a bad motor. Start by tightening every screw you can reach, from the canopy screws at the ceiling down through the downrod set screws to the blade irons and the blades themselves. Then check that all blades sit at the same height by measuring from the ceiling to each blade tip. If it still wobbles, a balancing kit (a plastic clip and stick-on weights, a few dollars at any hardware store) fixes most of the rest: clip, test, move, repeat until smooth. A fan that wobbles after all of that may have a warped blade or a mounting problem, which is where we come in.

Fan Hums But Won't Spin? It's Usually the Capacitor

This is the ceiling fan version of the classic AC failure. The start capacitor gives the motor its initial kick; when it dies, the motor hums energetically and goes nowhere. Sometimes a gentle push gets it turning, which confirms the diagnosis but is not a fix. Replacing the capacitor is a quick, inexpensive repair, and we carry common values on the van. If a new capacitor does not wake it up, then we are looking at motor windings, and at that point we will talk honestly about replacement cost versus repair.

Remote Stopped Working: Pairing and Receivers

Before you blame the fan, blame the remote: fresh batteries first, always. Next, check for a wall switch that someone flipped off (the remote cannot work without power to the receiver). Many fans pair the remote to a receiver in the canopy using small DIP switches or a learn button sequence; a power outage or a battery change can knock the pairing out. If re-pairing does not work, the receiver module in the canopy may have failed, which we can replace. We also see this after spring storms: a surge takes out the receiver while the motor is perfectly fine.

New Installs and Pre-Wired Boxes

A ceiling fan must hang from a fan-rated box, not a standard light box. A regular box is not built for the weight and vibration, and it is the hidden cause of wobbles that never balance out. When we install or replace a fan, we check the box first. If it is not fan-rated, we will tell you plainly what needs to change before we hang anything. For the two-story great rooms in newer Harvest Point builds, we bring the right ladders and handle the height safely.

When Replacement Beats Repair

We will be straight with you: a basic builder-grade fan that needs a motor is usually not worth a motor. By the time you add parts and labor, a new fan costs about the same and comes with a warranty. We recommend repair when the problem is the capacitor, the receiver, the remote, the pull switch, or the mounting, and replacement when the motor itself is gone on an inexpensive unit. Either way, you get the math before you decide. If cooling trouble goes beyond the fan, our AC repair and thermostat repair notes cover the next steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop my ceiling fan from wobbling?

Tighten every screw from the canopy to the blade irons, then check that all blades sit level. If it still wobbles, use a balancing kit: clip the temporary weight to one blade at a time and run the fan to find the blade that improves things, then stick a permanent weight on top of that blade. Persistent wobble after balancing can mean a warped blade or a mounting issue.

Why does my ceiling fan hum but not spin?

Nine times out of ten, the start capacitor has died. The motor gets power (hence the hum) but no starting kick. It is an inexpensive part and a quick fix. If a new capacitor does not solve it, the motor windings may be shot, and we will give you honest repair-versus-replace math.

Why did my ceiling fan remote stop working?

Check the batteries first, then make sure the wall switch feeding the fan is on. Many remotes pair to a receiver in the canopy via DIP switches or a learn sequence, and power outages can break the pairing. If re-pairing fails, the receiver module itself may have failed, often after a power surge.

Can you install a ceiling fan where a light fixture was?

Yes, if the electrical box is fan-rated and properly supported. A standard light box is not built for a fan's weight and vibration. We check the box before hanging anything, and if it needs upgrading we will tell you exactly what that involves before we start.

Do you work on fans in two-story great rooms?

Yes. Newer builds around Harvest Point and Cherry Grove have tall great rooms with fans we service regularly. We bring the proper ladders and handle the height safely. Mention the ceiling height when you call so we show up prepared.
